Augmented States of Water: Landmark Artwork & Augmented Reality.

According to physics, water exists in three primary states: liquid, solid, and gas. However, Geert Mul raises questions about the cultural states of water. Mul defines distinct cultural states of water within the context of the Dutch Water Defence Lines (1815): Water as Culture, Water as Infrastructure, Water as a Military Instrument, Water as Technology, Water as Politics, and Water as Ecology.
Mul has designed maps for each cultural state of water, which are concealed within the half-transparent mirrors of the artwork. When a visitor approaches the artwork, the LED backlight illuminates and reveals the maps. A triadic image emerges that encompasses the spectator, a map featuring a cultural state of water, and the landscape.
When using the Augmented Reality app for the artwork, the cultural states of water become experiential, projected onto the surrounding landscape.
Geert Mul highlights the political significance of meta-concepts such as ’the self,’ ‘culture,’ and ‘nature,’ and their interplay. These concepts hold immediate relevance to pressing issues, such as the climate change debate. Through this artwork, Geert Mul invites viewers to reflect on the multifaceted cultural nature of water and its resonance within the broader contexts of politics and ecology.

“WATERSTAAT” door Geert Mul, gemaakt in 2013, is een hybride kunstwerk dat elementen van een lichtsculptuur en een augmented reality-toepassing combineert. Het kunstwerk is gelegen bij Lunet aan de Snel, een historische locatie binnen de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, die erkend is als UNESCO Werelderfgoed.
Volgens de natuurkunde bestaat water in drie primaire toestanden: vloeibaar, vast en gas. Geert Mul roept echter vragen op over de culturele toestanden van water. Mul definieert verschillende culturele toestanden van water binnen de context van de Nederlandse Waterlinie (1815) en het waterfort Lunet aan de Snel (1845): Water als cultuur, Water als infrastructuur, Water als militair instrument, Water als technologie, Water als politiek, en water als ecologie.
Mul heeft voor elke culturele watertoestand een kaarten ontworpen, die verborgen zijn in de halftransparante spiegels van het kunstwerk. Wanneer een bezoeker het kunstwerk nadert, verlicht de LED-achtergrondverlichting de half-transparante spiegels en worden de kaarten zichtbaar. Er ontstaat een triadisch beeld dat de toeschouwer, een kaart met de culturele staat van water en het landschap omvat.
Wanneer je de Augmented Reality-app voor het kunstwerk gebruikt worden de culturele staten van water geprojecteerd op het omringende landschap.
Geert Mul benadrukt de politieke betekenis van meta-concepten als ‘het zelf’, ‘cultuur’ en ‘natuur’, en hun wisselwerking. Deze concepten zijn bepalend voor de kijk op urgente debatten, zoals het debat over klimaatverandering. Via dit kunstwerk nodigt Geert Mul kijkers uit om na te denken over de veelzijdige culturele aard van water en de resonantie ervan binnen de bredere context van politiek en ecologie.
