HEAVEN EARTH INSIDEOUT
Rijksmonument De Knoptoren, Sint-Oedenrode. Comissioned Artwork Geert Mul 2021
Kunststichting Sint-Oedenrode gaf Geert Mul opdracht om vier permanente kunstwerken te realiseren in de Knoptoren te Sint-Oedenrode. De religieuze en culturele geschiedenis van de kerk staat in het nieuwe werk centraal, evenals religie en spirituele beleving in algemenere zin: het verbeelden van de relatie tussen ‘de mens’ en ‘het heelal’, ‘de schepping’ of ‘het sublieme’. Voor dit project maakt Geert Mul gebruik van diverse media en materialen en gaat hij samenwerken met de lokale Heemkundekring.
“Een landschap in een kerk is nooit zomaar een landschap. Met mijn landschap in het kerkgebouw van de knoptoren “HeavenEarthInsideOut’ verbind ik de monotheïstische lineaire visies met circulaire en holistische visies uit het Boeddhisme, Shintoïsme, Taoïsme, animistische en natuur- religies/levenswijzen”
Het beklimmen van de Knoptoren is een belevenis. De wenteltrap voert langs 15 Geschiedenisjes; kleurrijke raampjes die de vensters vormen op de rijke geschiedenis van de kerk. Halverwege de klim is op de zolderkamer een animatie van het kerkgebouw te zien, als een soort fata morgana. Eindpunt van de beklimming is de torenkamer. Op vier beeldschermen is het uitzicht te zien door de 4 seizoenen heen. Deze ‘Kosmologie’ vormt een tweeluik met een videowerk in de benedenzaal. Met deze kunstwerken wil Geert Mul het gebouw ontsluiten als cultureel medium dat getuigt van zijn eigen religieuze en immateriële geschiedenis.

Art Foundation Sint-Oedenrode assigned Geert Mul to realize four permanent art interventions for national monument de Knoptoren, Sint-Oedenrode. The religious and cultural history of the church is central to the new work, as well as religion and spiritual experience in a more general sense: imagining the relationship between ‘man’ and ’the universe’, ‘creation’ or ’the sublime’.
A landscape in a church is never just a landscape. Indeed in a Christian church, heaven (and hell) is always opposed to the ‘earth’. With my landscape “Heaven Earth Inside Out” in the church building of the Knoptoren I connect the (monotheistic) linear approach with a circular holistic tradition of Buddhism, Shintoism, Taoism (and the great animistic- and nature religions/philosophies)
Climbing the Knoptoren is an experience. The spiral staircase leads past 15 Histories, colourful windows that form the windows on the church’s rich history. Halfway through the climb, an animation of the church building can be seen in the attic room, like a kind of mirage. The end point of the ascent is the tower room. The view through the 4 seasons can be seen on four screens. This ‘Cosmology’ forms a diptych with a video work in the downstairs room. Geert Mul wants to disclose the building as a medium that bears witness to its own religious and immaterial history.
