Piƫzo-print on fine art paper, 110 x 110 cm, Geert Mul 2003
Prints based on image analysis of a collection of 100,000 random images from the internet.
At what moment does a random collection of 100,000 images ordered by only formal image properties change into a form of meaning, the ultimate moment of creation, the “from nothing to something” moment?
The image analysis software (by Geert Mul and programmer Carlo Prelz) is designed as a kind of mixing console to explore and generate image selections and arrangements, and store those in high resolution.
After a good deal of experimenting Mul arrives at a composition that is to his liking. ‘That choice is purely intuitive. In that sense I’m no different from a composer making a composition.’ Titles are given on the basis of associations with the work in question.
